What Does It Mean to Be a Christian?
Being a Christian is more than identifying with a religion or affirming certain values. It means embracing the truths of Scripture about God, humanity, and salvation, resulting in a transformed life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Being a Christian is more than identifying with a religion or affirming certain values. It means embracing the truths of Scripture about God, humanity, and salvation, resulting in a transformed life through faith in Jesus Christ.
A New Identity in Christ
Being a Christian is not about cultural identity or religious affiliation. It is about being transformed by the truth of God’s Word. Scripture teaches that all people are sinners, separated from a holy God (Romans 3:23), and deserving of judgment (Ezekiel 18:4). Yet, in His love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ—fully God and fully man (John 1:1,14; Colossians 2:9)—to live a sinless life, die in the place of sinners, and rise again (1 Peter 3:18; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
When a person turns from sin and trusts in Christ, they are made new. They are forgiven, declared righteous, united with Christ, and reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:14–20; Romans 3:26). This new identity means, that before the eyes of a holy and righteous God, the believer is no longer defined by sin, but by their relationship with Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Daily Discipleship
Following Christ is not a one-time decision but a lifelong pursuit. Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). This means turning from sin, submitting to His lordship, and growing in holiness by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Philippians 2:12–13).
Daily discipleship involves learning from Scripture, living in obedience, and striving to become more like Christ (John 17:17; Romans 12:1–2). It is not motivated by earning God’s favour but flows from gratitude for the salvation He has provided. True saving faith always results in a life marked by repentance, obedience, and a growing love for God (1 John 2:3; Ephesians 2:10).
Living in Community
All who place their faith in Jesus Christ are joined by the Holy Spirit into one body—the Church (1 Corinthians 12:12–13). The Church is the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25–27), with Christ Himself as its Head (Colossians 1:18). While every believer is part of this spiritual body, God calls us to gather in local churches for worship, teaching, fellowship, and accountability (Hebrews 10:25; Acts 2:42). Through the Church, we are built up in the faith, equipped for service, and united in our mission to glorify God and proclaim the gospel to a lost and dying world (Ephesians 4:11–16; Matthew 28:19).
Embracing the Lordship of Christ
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, coequal with the Father, and Creator of all things (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16–17). He came to reveal God (Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:1–3), redeem sinners (Mark 10:45), and will one day reign as King (Philippians 2:9–11). Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, Jesus secured salvation for all who believe (1 Peter 2:24; Romans 5:8). As Lord, He now reigns at the Father’s right hand and will return to judge and rule (Acts 1:9–11; John 5:22–23). To be a Christian is to confess Jesus as Lord, submitting to His authority in every area of life (Romans 10:9; Colossians 1:18).
