How Does One Become a Christian?

Salvation is entirely a work of God’s grace. It is not earned by human effort or merit, but granted through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9; 1 Peter 1:18–19). From eternity past, God graciously chose in Christ those whom He would save (Ephesians 1:4–5), yet Scripture is clear: every person is responsible to repent of their sin and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:18–19; Acts 17:30).

Becoming a Christian involves…

  • Hearing the Gospel: Faith comes through hearing the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23). God uses the proclamation of His Word to draw sinners to Himself.
  • Believing in Jesus: Trusting in His death and resurrection as the only means of salvation (John 3:16; Romans 3:26). True faith acknowledges Jesus as Lord and submits to His authority (Romans 10:9–10).
  • Repenting of Sin: Turning from sin and toward God, confessing personal guilt and forsaking rebellion (Acts 3:19; 1 Thessalonians 1:9). Repentance is inseparable from saving faith.

Receiving New Life: Regeneration is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, giving the believer a new heart and new desires (John 3:3–7; Titus 3:5). This new life bears the fruit of obedience and transformation (Ephesians 2:10).

All who come to Christ in faith are justified.

All who come to Christ in faith are justified—declared righteous before God—not because of their own works, but because Christ’s righteousness is credited to them (2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 3:24–26). This begins a lifelong process of sanctification, as believers grow in holiness by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Philippians 2:12–13).

“Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;” — Acts 3:19
